Which Glass to Choose?

A good rule of thumb when deciding which glass or glass range to choose, is to spend the same amount on one bottle and the same amount on one glass. The glass will (with care) last a lot longer than the bottle. A good bottle of wine deserves the right delivery, otherwise you are compromising the enjoyment of the wine and limiting its expression.

Every different glass shape in the world will affect the taste of the same wine. Not only Riedel glass. Try this at home. Try the same wine from differently shaped wine glasses. You will see a difference.

Start your collection by choosing one glass shape for your favourite red wine and one glass shape for your favourite white wine. See the difference, then expand your collection across the wine styles you often drink.

The same Pinot Noir (for example) tastes completely different in any of the Burgundy/Pinot Noir glasses as it does in any of the Bordeax/Cabernet glasses acorss the ranges.

The Vinum range is the most popular lead crystal range. The cost of each glass is very competitive and each glass is designed for a particular wine style and grape variety.

The Vinum Extreme range was originally designed to fully express fuller New World wines and there is a noticeable difference between these 2 ranges when used with the appropriate wine. You may simply choose Vinum Extreme because you prefer the more modern ‘diamond’ design.

The Sommeliers range of glasses are made by hand and are the ultimate vessel for expressing wine. The aesthetic of the glass is also part of the appeal as the bowl shapes and stem design are noticeably finer and more elegant. Where the shape of the glass in the Sommeliers range is unique, then the delivery of the wine is unique. For some of the glasses, there is a very limited difference in the delivery of the wine, but the Sommeliers glass remians a more elegant, lighter and better balanced glass. All in all a more pleasurable experience.

The ‘O’ range has been designed to allow the drinker to enjoy all the benefits of the Vinum range but with the following differences:

• More economical introduction
• Fits easily in the dishwahser
• No stem to break
• Used in an informal setting
• Outdoor use where there is a risk of the glass tumbling over. Ie on grass.
• Complimets the stemmed glasses – ie for water or juice
• For sedentary dining where hand and glass contact is limited.
